BASF is going to be a key supplier to the Stockholm Bypass Stockholm project

    • Master Builders Solutions® products from BASF will be used in a big part of the concrete constructions incorporated in tunnels as part of the Stockholm Bypass project
    • BASF is thus a key partner in one of Sweden’s biggest infrastructure projects

Rosersberg, Sweden – 10, September 2018 – Products from BASF’s Master Builders Solutions® portfolio will be key components in the Swedish Transport Administration’s ongoing Stockholm Bypass project. This infrastructure project is one of Sweden’s biggest ever, and will be completed in 2026. For the 18-kilometre tunnel section being built under Malar lake, BASF will be supplying products for use in the concrete walls, tunnel interior ceilings and reinforcement structures in the surrounding area.

“This means that BASF is now back underground participating in a major project, and supplying innovative and effective admixtures to the sprayed concrete that will be used in the tunnel construction”, says Technical Manager Håkan Nykvist. He continues: “The Stockholm Bypass project is now costing close to 30 billion Swedish kroner in total, and we at BASF are proud to be a key partner in this modern infrastructure project that will help to reduce the volumes of traffic using the Essingeleden motorway that currently passes straight through the centre of Stockholm.

In order to protect natural habitats and cultural heritage sites, 18 of the new road’s 21 kilometres will be built as tunnels. Eighty per cent of the costs of the Stockholm Bypass project are being funded by congestion charges, and 20 per cent by the Swedish state.  BASF products that will be used in the tunnels under the Malar lake include admixtures promoting concrete acceleration such as Master X-Seed, which can double the early strength and thus increase concrete production rates without compromising any other of its properties

    Less environmental impact

The use of Master X-Seed also means that the concrete will not require as much heat before it sets. This will minimise the need for additional energy consumption. Other BASF products that will be used by the Transport Administration include concrete performance enhancers from the MasterRoc series. Sustainable sprayed concrete of outstanding quality is an important component in rock reinforcement and stabilisation structures for the tunnels being built under Malar lake. Wet-mix sprayed concrete of the interior tunnel surfaces provides significant reductions in time and costs, reduced health risks, increased occupational safety and a reduced negative impact on the environment compared to conventional dry-spray methods.
