​​Master Builders Solutions participates in research project of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research​

Mannheim, Germany, July 26, 2021 – The greatest challenges facing the construction industry are the reduction of CO2 emissions and the increasing scarcity of raw materials. Both challenges will be addressed​ through the joint research project “ReCyCONtrol – Self-learning control technologies for the automated production of robust resource conserving concretes – key to the comprehensive utilization of mineral material flows”. The project receives funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and is coordinated by the Leibniz University Hannover, Germany. The experts from Master Builders Solutions® are part of the project team as specialists for concrete admixtures.

The goal of “ReCyCONtrol” is to produce robust and versatile concretes using recycled aggregates. Waste materials, the basis of recycled aggregates, are available in large quantities and have so far only been used to a limited extent in building construction. As part of the automated production process of concrete using recycled materials, innovative sensor and self-learning control technologies are supposed to detect quality fluctuations in the concrete mix and automatically compensate variations by adjusting the formulation. This enables more accurate production, avoids rejects, saves natural aggregates and reduces the amount of cement required. This ensures both consistent high quality concrete and cost-effectiveness. Used on a broad basis, natural resources can be conserved and CO2 emissions reduced. ​

As part of the joint research project, Master Builders Solutions owns the task of developing highly effective concrete admixtures for resource-conserving concretes using recycled aggregates. To this effect, Master Builders Solutions is providing resources and know-how at its global research and development center in Trostberg, Germany. Involving experts with different fields of expertise in the industry, such as plant engineering and sensor technology, is crucial to the success of the project. “The ReCyCONtrol project marks an important step towards the circular economy,” emphasizes Dr. Oliver Mazanec, Head of Product Management Europe at Master Builders Solutions. “We see great potential especially in the construction industry and in particular in concrete, the most widely used building material worldwide.”

With MasterSuna, Master Builders Solutions has already developed a number of solutions for a more sustainable use of resources for concrete production. The innovative superplasticizer facilitates the utilization of previously unsuitable sand grades and recycled aggregates for the production of standard concretes. The typical challenges of maintaining product consistency can be compensated for in a targeted manner. In combination with other admixtures, MasterSuna enables the production of high-quality concretes for demanding applications using local, clayey sands or recycled aggregates. “Our research and development generally attaches great importance to sustainability aspects,” says Dr. Oliver Mazanec. “Therefore, we are particularly pleased about our involvement in the ReCyCONtrol project and hope to set another milestone in this field together with our highly motivated partners.”
