Decorative Terrazzo Floors - Design by Imagination
Introduction to terrazzo
Terrazzo, the Italian word for terrace, is one of the original recycled products created by Venetian craftsmen by mixing small chunks of marble with clay then grinding it down to create comfortable walking surfaces on terraces and other living spaces in their home. This decorative floor quickly gained popularity and became a staple in Italian architecture.
Today, terrazzo flooring is widely used around the world for its beauty, durability, and low maintenance as a flooring solution. The demand for terrazzo floors has increased in the past decade in performance-driven institutions (e.g. schools, airports, and hospitals) and designer-driven markets (e.g. retail and commercial buildings). Terrazzo can also last the life of the building, becoming an excellent choice when evaluating finishes on a life cycle basis.
Master Builders Solutions' terrazzo floor solutions
At Master Builders Solutions, we recognize the benefits of terrazzo flooring in offering functionality and creative design in a flooring system. Terrazzo flooring possesses the potential to drive sustainability in the construction industry such as being made from recycled glass, marble, and granite in its composition, using zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) materials, and improving overall indoor air quality. If you are considering a highly decorative floor in an upcoming project, consider Master Builders Solutions' terrazzo floor solutions.

Sustainable construction with terrazzo flooring
Environmental impact of flooring
The construction industry focuses on the environmental impact on most construction materials. The evaluation encompasses many elements weighed on a scale of importance which includes, the material, composition, maintenance, recycled content, embodied energy and the environmental impact.
Durability of terrazzo floors
Sustainable construction is at the core of green construction. Terrazzo floors have an outstanding record of durability and typically last the life of the structure.
Low maintenance floor system
Thin-set epoxy terrazzo floors have extremely low maintenance costs. Annual stripping and resealing can utilize environmentally friendly water-based products. Routine maintenance includes dry and damp mopping with an occasional spray buffing.
Composition of terrazzo floor solutions
MasterTop DTZ is composed of naturally occuring aggregates, recycled glass and epoxy binders; these are sourced locally wherever possible. The binder constitutes approximately 25 - 30% of the volume of the terrazzo floors; the remainder of the floor is composed of aggregates, pigments and fillers.
Embodied energy
Initial life cycle assessments of embodied energy appear favorable compared to other floor finishes due to the longevity and low energy usage for maintenance.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)
MasterTop DTZ is composed of zero VOC materials and exhibits little or no off-gassing over the life of the cured floor.
Indoor air quality
The non-porous, cleanable terrazzo finish does not support microbial growth or allow moisture to accumulate, maintaining a mold-free environment with improved indoor air quality.
